A quick story about a photographer I met last year… let’s call him Joe.
Joe had been a wedding photographer for about ten years, and built himself a decent local business, primarily getting referrals through word of mouth. Not a big surprise there, as word of mouth is probably the most important source of business for most photographers.
But word of mouth only goes so far, and can keep you within a certain circle. To get beyond that, Joe decided to invest in his website. He hired a developer to put together a new site. Joe loaded up a bunch of his best images into some galleries, and he occasionally posted a new blog post. After several months, it became clear that while folks who looked for Joe enjoyed his website, he wasn’t bringing in new business from those doing Google searches.
Joe’s website wasn’t optimized for search engines. And then Joe started reading about search engine optimization (SEO). And Joe’s head hurt, because there’s a lot of information out there. And then Joe talked to a couple folks in the industry and learned that SEO changes over time, so not only was there an overwhelming amount of SEO information… a fair amount of it was wrong. And out of date.
Joe Isn’t Alone. SEO for Photographers is Daunting
Thankfully, as a serious photographer, there are options other than trying to figure out SEO on your own. I’ve written about several of them.
But the big challenge with SEO is that unless you know where you currently stand, it’s hard to know where to go from there. Do you focus on technical aspects? Is your content strategy in need of a boost? What about links? Do you have enough? Do you have spammy links?
