Lynda.com offers a bunch of great training for any number of subjects – topics include design, photography, video, business, and more. I’m convinced that anyone who’s ended up at Photowebo – meaning you have an interest in being a modern photographer and the online world – will find something of use.
With nearly 5,000 courses and over 200,000 video tutorials, it might be a bit overwhelming. I went through Lynda’s catalog and picked out seven courses that seem like a good fit for the modern online photographer looking for solid photography business training.
I’ve partnered with Lynda as an affiliate, which means I can offer you a 10 day free trial to check out Lynda, and if you love it and subscribe I get a commission that helps keep Photowebo in business. Win-win!
WordPress Video Training
WordPress Essential Training with Morten Rand-Hendriksen is a thorough introduction to WordPress. Morten provides an expert view delivered in a beginner-friendly format to get folks into WordPress and set up for success. You’ll learn about posts and pages, how to customize your site with themes and menus, how to extend the site with plugins, and how to tweak your WordPress settings and options to optimize your site and keep it secure.
WordPress and Genesis DIY: Showcasing Photography provides a beginner to intermediate look at building a basic photography website to showcase your work. I’ve met Carrie Dils at several events over the past few years, and her fun personality shows through in her online teaching. She walks through the various pieces that comprise a WordPress photography website including the choice of a theme, finding the right plugins, and helping the site be successful once it’s live.
Web Marketing for Photographers
Social Media for Photo and Video Pros provides a good introduction to using social media to help build a platform. This course is aimed specifically at photography and videography professionals. Instructor Richard Harrington (you may know him as the editor of the popular Photofocus website) has a good handle on what makes sense to get actual results from social media instead of just wasting time.
Content Marketing: Blogs is a relatively short course (about an hour) that will get you started with using your blog as a marketing tool for your photography business. While her course isn’t specific to photography, the topics are relevant for any small business and she’ll help you turn your blog into a marketing tool for your business.
Instagram for Business is a nice targeted course by Anson Alexander. I maintain that as photographers, Instagram ought to be one of our key social networks regardless of genre, but simply posting photos is only the beginning of an Instagram presence. To use the tool effectively for business you’ll want to look at optimizing your profile, connecting with the community, and posting images and content aimed at driving business results. This course will help you do just that.
Photography Business School
Insights on Building a Photography Business is a class from “The Strobist” David Hobby and a look at a modern photography business. I recently had the chance to hear him speak about his take on business and he has some refreshing ideas we don’t hear from many of the usual photographers that only talk about cameras and lights. He talks a bit about social media, curiosity, and merging the online and offline words as a photographer. Beyond that, he provides a look at his business ecosystem and how the pieces fit together.
Insights on Photography: Business and Social Media from Derrick Story is a similar course but from someone with a different background and current situation. Like Hobby, Story talks about diversification and various sources of income for the modern photographer. Story also looks at merging the worlds of traditional photography, photo gear, and social media, with an eye to the future as the options continue to evolve.
With the huge course catalog available, I’d encourage you to sign up for a free trial and see what you might be able to learn.
