In a colossal failure of devaluing the work of the very photographers they (in theory) want to support, 500px is currently running a photo contest where the grand prize includes no monetary or tangible prize whatsoever! But they get to use your photo for free.
So awesome! Or not!
It’s disappointing to see this sort of rights grab from a company that should know better. Check out the 500px Photo Quest. In their words, they “want to see your best model-released group photos.”
You submit your photos via uploads to 500px using their tag. And then you “wait to find out if you won our awesome prize!!!” which consists of:
You won’t want to miss out on the chance to win this incredible prize! The winning photo will spend the entire month of December as our social media cover photo! With over 1 million followers on our our Facebook, Twitter, and Google + accounts, this is one seriously amazing prize that truly can’t be bought.
While their prize can’t be bought, you know what can be bought? Quality photography. Smart photographers realize there’s value in their work, and they won’t give it away for free.
Hell, 500px runs its own stock photo service where they let folks license the use of photographs. For money. That’s right, in exchange for the use of a photograph, 500px thinks that folks will pay money.
